Add topicmode=packed
[edit]I think the default gallery looks ugly. I'd be prepared to support this if we switched to <gallery mode=packed> in the general case:
-
One kitten
-
Two kittens
-
Three kittens

- I agree with you. Can't we use CSS to make all galleries in the main namespace look like "mode=packed" by default? Correct me if I'm wrong: apparently there's no "mode=packed" in CSS, but maybe we can use some combination of other CSS properties to achieve the same effect. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 12:07, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Daniel Carrero, Xbony2 Apparently there is a configuration setting called mw:Manual:$wgGalleryOptions, so we could raise a Phabricator task to request that the default mode be changed to "packed". This, that and the other (talk) 10:41, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- That could be useful :) -Xbony2 (talk) 12:28, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- I agree! I added mw:Manual:$wgGalleryOptions in the text of the vote. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 16:51, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

oppose proposal 2
[edit]I included the proposal 2 (forbidding "Gallery" sections with fewer than three images) in case anyone wants to support it, but I believe I'm going to oppose it.
I'm OK with having galleries with 1 or 2 images. I know galleries use up our vertical space, but I'm not sure our usual right-floating images are necessarily always a benefit compared to galleries. I'm fine with letting people have the freedom to use or not use galleries as they see fit, including the ones with few images. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 12:24, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Gallery template
[edit]I'd like it if we used a new template called {{gallery}}
or something instead of doing <gallery mode=packed> every time to make it simpler, and also if we want to change it later. -Xbony2 (talk) 22:59, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- I prefer not having a gallery template if the whole idea is just choosing the style/appearance/layout of the galleries. It should be possible to use CSS or MediaWiki configurations to achieve that.
- It's best to use the
<gallery></gallery>
syntax, which works in Wikipedia, Commons and other wikis. Less new stuff to learn to contribute to Wiktionary. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 16:15, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Are there any layout benefits to this?
[edit]e.g. on mobile devices? Equinox ◑ 19:40, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- On my PC, I checked https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/line (mobile link), but I don't have a cell phone right now to check. It does look like galleries should save our horizontal space space as opposed to using right-floating images, especially in entries with many senses and images (like the one I linked to). --Daniel Carrero (talk) 19:45, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- The mobile version puts floating images in the center instead of floating them. This causes the images to appear before the entry, whereas in galleries they appear after the entry. --WikiTiki89 20:19, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Slider gallery
[edit]I think I would be more open to a slider with a cap of 3 images. --Victar (talk) 22:30, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
