There is NO WAY that these are the 1000 most common Turkish words

[edit]

As someone who has pretty much learnt Turkish as a second language - there are not many of us, but anyway - there is NO WAY that these are the 1000 most common Turkish words.

  • 445. art = an unused word for 'heel' or 'behind'. As an instruction it could be "increase!".
  • 547. malzeme = nothing wrong with that word, other than that there are many more common words that are used in its place.
  • 633. süreç = I don't think so, not in the first 1000 most common words.

Then, this collection of ordered words:

  • 668. sorumluluk = responsibility. hmm, maybe. Comforably in the second - or fifth - 1000 words, though.
  • 669. davranmak = to behave. Not in this form: maybe davranış or davranıyor (behaving)
  • 670. mektup = letter (in an envelope). OK
  • 671. soğuk = cold. So this is the 671'st word, after davranmak and sorumluluk and süreç. No way.
  • 672. canlı = lively. OK, often used for all kinds of things.
  • 673. idi = either a very seldom used gramatical pseudo-word, or 'Ox'. Before inek=cow ?!?

also, regarding form, eg #669, while many words are in their (less used) infinitive form X-mak, like davranmak (to behave, to run) other words are not, like çıkar (which, otherwise, is a very rare noun).

  • 795. mücadele = conflict. Many other more common words to say this.
  • 839. katkı = appendage. In the first 1000 most common words - I don't think so.

also, the words

  • 962. kas = muscle
  • 963. meclis = parlimentary like meeting (seldom used)
  • 964. öteki = the one on the other side
  • 965 uğraşmak = to struggle. I don't know; I think that there are more commonly used words for whenever this would be used.

Anyway, these are all before 'tamam == OK', which, believe me, is used all the time.

  • 987. sunulmak = to be supposed. Useful word, but not in the first 1000, unfortunately.

Anyway, this is ordered similar to

  • 991. geç = past, late
  • 992. hareket etmek = to move
  • 993. yumurta = egg. Yes, "egg", used everyday by almost everyone, just makes it into the top 1000, after "sunulmak", "mücadele" and "idi"

Finally, on this list, the words have a tendency to be grouped into small groups of related words, for example, the consequative words:

  • dışarı
  • merkez
  • ortam
  • yerine
  • düzey
  • köy

are all, kind of, to do with location
