(medical genetics) A very rare, disabling genetic disorder of the connective tissue in which fibrous tissue (including ligaments, muscles, and tendons) ossifies (“transforms into bone”) when damaged. Today is Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Awareness Day, which marks the day in 2006 when the discovery that a mutation in the ACVR1 gene causes the disease was announced.
