• If you know what a word means, consider creating the entry yourself instead of using this request page.
• Please indicate the gender(s) of nouns in languages that have them.
• For inflected languages, if you see inflected forms (plurals, past tenses, superlatives, etc.) indicate the base form (singular, infinitive, absolute, etc.) of the requested term and the type of inflection used in the request.
• For words in languages that don’t use Latin script but are listed here only in their romanized form, please add the correct form in the native script.
• Don’t delete words just because you don’t know them – it may be that they are used only in certain contexts or are archaic or obsolete.
• Don’t simply replace words with what you believe is the correct form. The form here may be rare or regional. Instead add the standard form and comment that the requested form seems to be an error in your experience.

• hortolan, http://cnrtl.fr/definition/ortolan mentions it but not which meaning, and somewhat surprisingly, I can't track it down! It appears in glossaries but I can't track down the original sentence that Rabelais used it in. Le Quart Livre (as referenced in the link) is available online too. Godefroy doesn't have it (it has a 1611 citation in English). Help. Renard Migrant (talk) 12:34, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

  Well, méthode is probably older than 1470 but the Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française only recognised it in 1740. 1740 is probably when méthode surpassed methode as the standard form. Renard Migrant (talk) 17:44, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

  Almost certainly not the etymon. There is a single Middle French citation of progressif, TLFi and FEW both have the 1372 citation from Corbichon and then 1671 as the next citation. The 1671 author presumably wasn't borrowing it from the single usage in 1372 but borrowed the word directly from Latin. Renard Migrant (talk) 21:34, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
