Wiktionary:Changing username/Archive 2016

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Hello. When I created my account (on Wikipedia), I used the abbreviation of my first name (Julián), and my second name (Alberto), because in other pages I used "Julian L." as a username, but there are pages where I couldn't use a dot in it (so I used Juli Alberto) and other ones where I couldn't use a space (so I used AlbertoJulian), and when I was creating my account on Wikipedia, I didn't want to use the dot, so that is why I used Juli Alberto. Lately, I was using a variant of the first option, with a underscore (instead of a space) and without the dot (Julian_L), and I would like to use it here and on the rest of Wikimedia. That variation is not new, but it's my favourite one.
--Juli Alberto (talk) 05:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I attempted to rename you, but the system will not allow it. The error message says that your requested new name is too similar to existing names User:Julian l and User:JulianL. —Stephen (Talk) 09:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. And, what about User:AlbertoJulian? Is that username available? --Juli Alberto (talk) 19:18, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Almost. That username is too similar to an existing username: User:Albertojulian. There is another possibility...you can go to your PREFERENCES tab under your current name, Juli Alberto, and then under Existing signature you can change it to whatever you like, such as Julian L. Your username would still be Juli Alberto, but all of your comments, anything that you sign with ~~~~, would be signed as Julian L. (Like my name, which is User:Stephen G. Brown, but signed as —Stephen) But if you still want to change your username, try to think of another one and we’ll give it another try. —Stephen (Talk) 20:04, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. So, I think I will change my signature. Another username that I could use is User:Julián Alberto, but, will it be possible?
--Juli Alberto (talk) 22:38, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not yet. The chosen username is too similar to an existing username: User:Julianalberto. What about something more unusual, such as User:Julián de A y L or something of that sort? —Stephen (Talk) 22:47, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
May be. I was thinking in these possibilities: User:Julián A. L., User:Julián A. de L. (my surname doesn't have a "de", but that is not important) and (finally) your option: User:Julián de A y L. Try in this order, and the first available username will be mine.
Also, I was thinking about… translating my name? For example, User:Giuliano_L (Italian), User:Giuliano Alberto (Italian), User:Giuliano A. L. (Italian), User:Julião_L (Portuguese), User:Julião Alberto (Portuguese) or User:Julião A. L. (Portuguese). Maybe these can be alternative option, in case the three first ones are not available, and if the same problem (with the Spanish alternatives) doesn't persist. --Julian_L (talk) 03:05, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it worked using your second choice, User:Julián A. de L.. Your first choice, User:Julián A. L., was too close to Julian41, JulianaL and Julianal. —Stephen (Talk) 11:44, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! --Julian_L (talk) 16:45, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I realize that there is already a User:Kleio (w/ no activity, apparently?) and that it may be problematic to take it over, but I would very much prefer that. If it is impossible, I would also be ok with User:KIeio, with a capital i instead of a lowercase L.

Anyhow, would love to change my username as my current one is a pseudonym of mine I used when I was, well, younger. It feels whimsical and immature, and it annoys me a great deal. 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚢 · 🇹 · 🇨 · 10:55, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:Kleio is likely to be a problem. It was last used in October 2015, which is only about six months ago. You could e-mail User:Kleio and ask whether he wants to keep his username, but I suspect he will want to keep it (Special:EmailUser/Kleio).
I can try User:KIeio with cap I and see if the system will permit it. Just let me know which way you want to go. —Stephen (Talk) 19:17, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The capital letter i version would be fine, I hope it works. 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚢 · 🇹 · 🇨 · 19:26, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. Kleio (t · c) 00:07, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, while creating my account i accidentally typed the "X" as a capital letter and I would please like it corrected to a lower case 'x'. x8BC8x (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The first letter is automatically capitalized. It can’t be made into a lowercase. However, you can go into your Preferences tab and change your Signature to appear however you like. Whenever you sign your name with four tildes ~~~~, it will appear according to your preferences. —Stephen (Talk) 00:02, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hah!!! Ohhh alrighty then. Thanks for the info!!! x8BC8x (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wiktionarians,

I hereby would like to request the username amin. I'm an avid contributor to Wiktionary and would like to to have a username that is simple and recognisable for other community members. Thanks in advance. Amin wordie (talk) 22:08, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Someone is using the name ab:w:Алахәыла ахцәажәара:Amin on the Abkhaz Wikipedia, but he has not been active for quite a while. You need to leave a message on his talk page, explaining that you want to take that name, and ask if he objects. I think you should allow two weeks for him to respond. If he does not answer, we can try to take that name. I can't promise that the namechange program will allow it, but we can try it if the original Amin does not object.
If you want to try to usurp this name, please place a notification on Amin's talk page. I will translate a proper notification, since Amin does not know English well. —Stephen (Talk) 08:33, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Following is a translation of the notification that you can use:

Thank you for the reply and translation. I have left the message on Amin's talk page. I'll check back in two weeks. Amin wordie (talk) 03:42, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Stephen_G._Brown Hi Stephen, A couple of months passed by and the user did not reply or object to the username change. Is it possible to try to change my username to 'amin' now? Amin wordie (talk) 17:39, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. —Stephen (Talk) 19:36, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:Serenedijppitty → User:IsomorphycSandbox

[edit]

Hello; could you please coalesce my account User:Serenedijppitty into my new account, User:IsomorphycSandbox? I have found it is quite difficult for me to work on modules without a dedicated sandbox account. While I have always been transparent that these accounts are the same person, and have never used it for anything else, I would like to have concordant usernames. For clarity, I have exactly four Wiktionary accounts (the other two are Isomorphyc, my main account, and OrphicBot, my robot account), and I would like to reduce this to three. I regret the confusion of names. Thank you. Isomorphyc alias Serenedijppitty (talk) 01:40, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again; I wanted to post here as User:IsomorphycSandbox to indicate my agreement in my scheme. Thank you. Isomorphyc alias IsomorphycSandbox (talk) 01:43, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello; I just wanted to stop in to demonstrate my complicity in this small matter of mine. Thanks. Isomorphyc (talk) 02:33, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. We can do that eventually, but at the moment there is a problem with the renaming program. Some renames go through, but a lot of renames get stuck unpredictably and become unusable (until the problem is fixed). See bug T137973. The stewards are asking us to hold off on renaming until they can figure out how to fix it. This procedure would involve both of your names, Serenedijppitty and IsomorphycSandbox, so both of them could become inoperable. Note that it has been broken since June 8th, about three weeks ago.
Note: When the bug is fixed, I will need to usurp the name IsomorphycSandbox for you, which means renaming it to something else in order to delete the name IsomorphycSandbox to make it available for your rename. That would mean that all edits you make using IsomorphycSandbox would become unattached to that name, and you would only see the edits that you made using the name Serenedijppitty. It won't be a problem if you don't mind losing the record of edits made with IsomorphycSandbox. —Stephen (Talk) 13:30, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Stephen, I appreciate your help, and regret the need to bring this trivial matter to your attention. I have deliberately not used IsomorphycSandbox at all, so any losses will only be in this thread; I misunderstood the text at the top of this page, and believed I had to create the new desired name to effect a unification. Any interval caused by the bug is not a problem. Thank you for letting me know about it. Isomorphyc (talk) 14:32, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good. So you want to wait until the program is fixed before we do this? It isn't clear to me whether you want to wait or go ahead now and take a chance on getting stuck. —Stephen (Talk) 17:54, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies, I misunderstood again. I assumed you meant the Stewards had made renaming off-limits till it is fixed. I'm very willing to roll the dice on making the change now; I will just use my main account Sandbox if it does get stuck temporarily. Thanks. Isomorphyc (talk) 19:36, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It all appears to have gone to completion. Nothing stuck. —Stephen (Talk) 01:14, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it worked. I appreciate it! Isomorphyc (talk) 11:00, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd just like to change the d to a D. I tried creating a new account, but, as I suspected, it would not let me due to the name being the same.

thank you.

This won’t work. If I try to make this change, I’ll get an error because it’s too close to an existing name. You only have the five edits you have just made, so you should simply stop using this name and create a new one (but with more difference than a case change). Maybe User:Dame Duplica. —Stephen (Talk) 03:50, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ok. thank you.

Hi. Can you please change my username to PseudoSkull? I don't think that's been used before. (I was suggested to come here rather than create a new account) Thanks. Philmonte101 (talk) 14:08, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If this doesn't work, can you try User:PseudoSkill, then User:MetaSkull, then User:MetaSkillz. Philmonte101 (talk) 14:13, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. (It is currently processing. Should be finished soon.) —Stephen (Talk) 21:18, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to change my username because it's my first and last name. I would like to change it to Andy Hexagon. unsigned comment by [User:85.230.105.202]] 05:01, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

You need to make this request using your registered username. I have no idea who you are. —Stephen (Talk) 10:00, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I had no idea my real name will be visible to the public. This is my real name and for anonimosity sake, I would like to change it to "66raihan". For the sake of my privacy and protection, I hope you will heed my request. Thank you.

Hi. Can you please change my username to Şêr? I don't think that's been used before. Thanks in advance --GeorgeAnimal. 18:40, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Şêr has not been used before. However, at the moment WikiMedia is running a maintenance script that interferes with renaming. The maintenance script was supposed to be finished by tonight at midnight, but now they say that it will take longer. Their notice to me says this: Please note that, due to a maintenance script (see Phabricator ticket), no renames will be processed until the script is finished. At this time we have no word on a completion date.
So I will be able to change your username after the maintenance script is completed. —Stephen (Talk) 19:31, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. —Stephen (Talk) 09:45, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
