This page is intended to give guidelines for creating Kashmiri entries on English Wiktionary as well as on adding Kashmiri translations to English words.

The main guidelines for creating any entry on English Wiktionary are set forth in Wiktionary:Entry layout; this page is an addition to that page, not a replacement.

Script

Kashmiri language is written in four scripts: Perso-Arabic ( Official Status), Devanagari, Sharada or Roman.

The Perso-Arabic script with additional diacritical marks is recognised as the only official script of Kashmiri language by the Jammu and Kashmir government and the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. It cuts across religious boundaries and is widely used in publications in the language. Kashmiri Language which is taught compulsory at schools in the valley till 10th grade is exclusively in this script.

The Devanagari script with additional diacritical marks is used by a few Kashmiri Pandit writers settled outside the valley of Kashmir. It is also used by a few journals published by their respective community.

The Sharada script, which was the oldest script used for Kashmiri, is nowadays being used by the priestly class of Kashmiri Pandit community for very restricted purposes such as writing horoscopes. Moreover, the script did not represent all the phonetic characteristics of the Kashmiri language. It is nearly extinct in common use, however, an attempt is being made to revive it.

The Roman script is used as informal script mostly for Internet purposes, due to the difficulty of typing either Perso-Arabic or Devanagari online.

Creating Kashmiri entries

Basic article

The Kashmiri entry is organised by part of speech (Noun/Verb/Adjective/Adverb...) as the primary divider. These are normally given as a level 3 header: ===Noun=== etc.

This header should be followed by the headword line which minimally contains the entry name, which must be added through a headword-line template; if no suitable template exists, use {{head}} directly.

Topic categories

Apart from categorising by part of speech, it is also desirable to categorize entries by topic. This is often done by preceding the definition with {{lb|ks|<some topic>}}

Form entries

Kashmiri words have many forms (plural, genitive, past tense, ...). To create a useful dictionary with minimal duplication of effort, make only very short referral entries for the inflected forms and concentrate the useful information to the main entry.

Translating English entries

Kashmiri translations are added to existing English entries in this format:

* Kashmiri: {{t|ks|<Kashmiri word>|m/f}}

If more words are needed, they are separated by commas. The m and f part is for stating the gender of the word; m for masculine gender , and f for feminine gender.

The translation line should be added to the translation section of the English entry, placed in alphabetical order of the language name.

Checking existing translations

Due to reformatting of entries, existing translations will sometimes be marked as requiring verification. This is usually due to addition of new definitions, and verification is then needed to state whether or nor the existing translation is suited for the new definition. Mostly such additions are observed after the fact, and it is then necessary to mark all existing translation with the template {{t-check}}.

Such translations needing verification are found in Category:Requests for review of Kashmiri translations. To verify a Kashmiri translation, the template needs to be removed from the line, and the word reinserted into the appropriate translation tables in the main section of ===Translations===.
