Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as Wezel in 1849. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from the hydronym Proto-Germanic *Wisila, a compound formed from Proto-Germanic *wisô- (“pasture, meadow”) and lo (“light forest”), a compound formed from Old Dutch winna (“pasture, meadow”) and lo (“pool”) or a derivation from Old Dutch *wisilo (“good forest”). The hamlet could also be named after Wesel. Compare Wenum-Wiesel, Wessel and Wissel.
