Etymology

Westerhaar is first attested as Op de Haar in 1849. Vriezenveensewijk is first attested as Friezenveensche Wijk of Veenkanaal in 1936. Westerhaar is a compound of wester (west-, western) and haar (sandy ridge). Vriezenveensewijk is a compound of the toponym Vriezenveen and wijk (secondary canal in a turf extraction area).
