Etymology

  • (Friesland) First attested as ghaest around 1333. Calque of West Frisian Westergeast, derived in turn from a compound of wester (western, west-) and Old Frisian gast (elevated sandy land). The element wester was added to distinguish the settlement from Wijgeest.
  • (Noord-Holland) First attested as Westegeest in 1562. Compound of wester (western) and geest (elevated sandy land). Named after a polder.
