[edit]First attested as burch in 1206. Compound of wester (“western, west-”) and either Middle Dutch borg (“castle”) or borg (“type of tree, perhaps a birch”). Compare Borculo, Borgele, Borkel en Schaft, Bulkenaar and Schipborg.
