[edit]Potentially attested as welsib in 944, attested with certainty as willesrijp in the 13th century. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Wille (a personal name) or Wilse and ripe (“edge, bank”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
