Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as waubagh in 1372. Derived from a compound hydronym composed of an uncertain first element and beek (“brook, stream”). The first element has been interpreted as Middle Dutch wald (“swamp forest, marshy forest”), but this interpretation is not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym.
