Etymology

[edit]

First attested with certainty as warken in 1416. Etymology unknown. A variety of derivations have been proposed: from Middle Dutch vorewerc (farm belonging to a manor or monastery), from werk (fortification), or from Old Dutch Waro (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing-. None of these proposals match well with the earliest attestations of the toponym.
