[edit]First attested as wagenbergen in 1446. Compound of Old Frisian Wago (a personal name) and the dative singular form of berg (“elevated place”). The toponym was gradually reinterpreted to Middle Dutch wagenborch (“type of fortification”). Compare Wagenberg.
