Wéngert
Appearance
Luxembourgish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From a contraction of Old High German wīngarto. Compare the same in regional German Wingert alongside uncontracted Weingarten. English vineyard is the same construct. In Luxembourgish, Wéngert secondarily joins itself to Wéng-, which is a velarized alternate stem of Wäin (“wine”); compare the diminutive Wéngchen.
