[edit]Borrowed from Proto-Brythonic *Gworθɨɣern, from Proto-Celtic *Uɸortigernos (from *uɸor- (“over”) + *tigernos (“lord, ruler”)). First attested in Gildas (late 5th – early 6th century CE).
