Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as flothorp in 943. Compound of dialectal vlo (“stream, river”) and a metathesized form of dorp (“village, settlement”). The interpretation of the first element as Proto-Germanic *flôh- (“rocky layer”) is incorrect.
