Etymology

[edit]

First attested as vlimen in 1239. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym related to Proto-Germanic *vlî (to flow). Alternatively, the toponym may be derived from Middle Dutch vlime (lancet), here referring to the needle-like shape of the terrain surrounding the village.
