  • (Gelderland) First attested as pheleppe in the early 9th century. Compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *felwa- (willow, Salix sp.) or *falwa- (pale) and *apa (river, current). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *fal (full, wide) is less likely.
  • (Noord-Brabant) First attested as velpe in 1306. Compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *felwa- (willow, Salix sp.) or *falwa- (pale) and *apa (river, current). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *fal (full, wide) is less likely.
