[edit]First attested as veille in 1475. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to vaal (“pallid, sallow”), from dialectal valgen (“lightly plow, lightly till”) or from a term cognate to Old High German felewa (“willow, Salix sp.”).
