Norwegian Nynorsk
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old Norse *Vaniflir, originally a fjord name. First part from *vaðr, *vannr (“dark, colourless; pale”) and may refer to the occurrence of olivine in the area. Last part possibly from *viflir (“low, wet terrain”). Another, unlikely, suggestion is *heflir.
