Translations

Hi, please don't include translations for non-lemma forms (active verb forms, adjective superlative forms, etc.) except in cases of ambiguity. Also, these pages don't need etymologies if the construction is regular. For example, tercantik could lose its etymology section (compare tallest). Otherwise, keep up the good work. Heritage scripts in Indonesia

Hi Berbuah salak! I don't know if you have seen my rant in Wiktionary:Etymology_scriptorium/2024/May#duka_(Sundanese), but what do you think about the current practice of some editors to reduce every Javanese/Balinese/Sundanese lemma in Latin script to a mere "Romanization" and build the main lemma in the historical native script?

I know that many speakers have strong "sentimental" ties to these scripts, but inspite of their high visibilty in public space (official buildings, road signs), most speakers only have limited proficiency in reading or writing the historical script and use the Latin script in everyday practice for writing in their regional language. Consequently, this should also be reflected in Wikipedia. I find it weird when I go to wong#Javanese that have to do an extra click to ꦮꦺꦴꦁ before I even get to know the meaning of the word, even though virtually every Javanese will write spontaneously write "wong" and not "ꦢꦸꦏ" when you ask them to write down the Javanese word for orang. I don't think it's a good move to force the use of historical script into the main entries of those languages and assume that writing them in Latin is just a romanization of them. Moreover, I see that speakers usually use Latin script to write their language in everyday use and it is not something that is prohibited or proscribed. Berbuah salak (talk) 09:48, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Language codes in Etymology Templates

Whenever there is a template that takes two language codes, the first one is always the language of the entry. When you put {{der|nl|dum|mandaet}} in an entry like mandat, you are claiming that it's a Dutch word that came from Middle Dutch mandaet: it adds the page to Category:Dutch terms derived from Middle Dutch. Somehow I don't think that's what you meant to do.

For Indonesian entries, please change the first code to "id" for Indonesian, as in {{der|id|dum|mandaet}}, which adds the page to Category:Indonesian terms derived from Middle Dutch. For Malay entries, it would be "ms", Javanese, "jv", etc. There's a full list of language codes at WT:LOL.

Malay third-person passive "di-"

Hi @Berbuah salak! I saw your question about my labelling of the Malay prefix di- as specifically a "third-person" passive marker.

In all honesty, the reason I use that label there is because that is specifically a prescription in how the prefix is used by the DBP in their grammar book, Tatabahasa Dewan.

Deleting pages

Regarding the comment you left me, you're welcome, and I feel like some explanation is due. Cleaning out Category:D isn't fun; when I started going through it this week, there were 250 entries to delete, and it's taken me hours to cut that in half. Many cases are not straightforward. They require careful consideration because anyone can mark an entry for deletion, often without good reason. Pinging admins to delete pages will just annoy them. Trust that the category will be emptied eventually, even if a page sits in it for a month. Ultimateria (talk) 11:07, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
