Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary! If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Read our Transwiki process, if you plan to work on that.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

Illustrations

Up to now, I don't think anyone has set adding illustrations as one of their goals. Personally, I would encourage it (I even think it's great to see someone finally doing this), and I think the majority of Wiktionarians would agree, but if you're going to add a lot, prepare to stir up some discussion! Great! Discussion is fine. Photography is an art. Some folks like what they see, and some folks don't. Thin skinned people don't last long in the WikiWorld. I'll add photos on a time-available basis. I've still got a hundred or so of mine to move from Wikipedia to Commons, and I generally pause to straighten out the related article and category messes I invariably uncover while doing so. Nice set of pics, I must say. I see no big problems, actually. The left alignment (pigeon and chapel) won't work I think, but apart from that, it's nice. Layout is, after all, always changing here, so in those instances where it overlaps other boxes, a small tweak can fix. Cheers. — Vildricianus 15:07, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean about "overlapping with other boxes." Does that refer to the two pages you mentioned, or is that something else? In the case of the two pages you mentioned, I made them that way so the image draws attention into and not out of the page. I don't see a problem with left-side images. If someone objects and they think it's important, they can change it, I'll point out the reasoning in the discussion page, and then I'll leave the whole thing for others to sort out. Perhaps different screen resolutions give a different view (I don't have the means to test that right now). A minor overlap was at trivet (the plural box was hidden), but never mind that. — Vildricianus 18:59, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Quotations

Hi there, I saw your question on Connel's talk page about the quotations format. You may want to have a look at Wiktionary:Quotations#How to format a quotation, which I updated just now, reflecting what is more or less current practice. Keep up the good work. Your quotations updates look fine with one exception. You removed the year from the example of a second quotation. Unfortunately, this makes no sense. Quotations should span the full range of centuries from most oldest known use to a very recent example. As a result, publication year is very important for each quote. Please reconsider. pacifist

It seems to me that the Wells quote is a tongue-in-cheek use of pacifist, and not a separate definition. --EncycloPetey 00:19, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
