movement of modules

[edit]

Hi @Surjection, thanks for reverting my unintended mistake. I wasn't aware that the automatic creation of redirects is suppressed (for modules only?).

Is moving modules significantly more risky? Can modules not be redirected, unlike pages in other namespaces? Why was there no automatic creation of a redirect? I have not been able to find specific information on module redirects on here or other Wikimedia projects. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks. Redirects do not exist in the module namespace. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 21:00, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Someone said on this page that "Redirects and moves are both supported" for modules. Am I misunderstanding what they said? Mifield (talk) 21:07, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I found someone who seems to have done exactly what I did today, almost nine years ago. A bug report was made, a fix was initiated, and then abandoned in favour of a different fix, and so on. Meanwhile, the suggestion that the person who made my mistake today almost nine years ago to have such exceptions (no redirects, hence no moves in the same way) documented on guideline pages seems to have gone unheeded.
It's a failure that what's usually thorough and clear documentation has failed to simply say, for example, "Redirects as they exist in other namespaces do not exist in the Module: namespace due to technical limitations. If you're thinking of moving a module, always create a topic on its talk page first, however minor the change in name is." -- or whatever the preferred policy of the community is.
Had such language existed, I feel that I would've seen it by now, and I would've known not to move a module without first making extensive preparations. I have been trying to port certain templates and modules to Wiktionary and I've been careful with them, never creating template or module main pages without first creating sandboxes, test cases, & documentation, and making sure things worked. My move of the module page in question may have appeared reckless, but I did not know that it was.
I don't know anyone here. My impression has been that existing documentation should be able to answer almost all of my technical questions. If that is incorrect, I'd love to be corrected.
Many guidelines across Wikimedia projects exist due to "technical limitations". There is no reason that similar information about pages in the Module: namespace should not exist right alongside those guidelines. I was not the first person to make this mistake, and if nothing changes, I will certainly not be the last.

Request reason:

The block on my account won't last much longer, but I believe it's a matter of principle that I should not be -- and a matter of record for the future that I should not have been -- punished for not adhering to current, reasonable, de facto guidelines that, had they been stated in the right places and had I seen them, I would've been perfectly willing to follow.
I will probably make it a personal project to make sure such guidelines and warnings do exist in the appropriate places across Wikimedia projects, regardless of whether this particular block on my account is lifted before it expires.
Thanks for your attention. Mifield (talk) 22:35, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
