Etymologies

[edit]

When giving etymologies, you can't just give the English transcription, but rather the transcription of the language from which it was borrowed. Vininn126 (talk) 19:33, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have speedily deleted these entries. The reason is that you reconstructed Gothic bardila based on a 5th/4th-century BC Illyrian king: the Illyrians were not Goths (they probably did not speak a Germanic language at all), and Gothic as a language did not come into existence until centuries later, when it is first attested very far from Illyria. This is an absolute rubbish basis for reconstruction, and I would like to ask you not to edit Gothic if you understand neither the language nor its historical context. The underlying noun bards I also speedily deleted (it is not attested: please note WT:ATTEST). β€” Mnemosientje (t Β· c) 10:16, 25 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this information. I'll take your word on it since I have probably misinterpretated someone's suggestion from Reconstruction talk:Proto-Germanic/Bardilaz. Juliusmborris (talk) 19:46, 25 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
