Proto-Algonquian

[edit]

Hello! Welcome to Wiktionary. Please refrain from unilaterally moving individual Proto-Algonquian forms from the ɬ orthography to the θ orthography, and particularly from removing the pointers present at whichever form isn't used with help readers find the other form. If you think the θ orthography should be preferred, let's discuss why. I see your comment on Category talk:Proto-Algonquian language and will reply there. - -sche (discuss) 21:49, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

{{sac-noun-an}}

[edit]

Templates need to be created before they can be used. If it's easier you can just use {{head|sac|noun|g=an}} (assuming what you meant was "animate"). DTLHS (talk) 21:27, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Right- thanks for the heads-up. I'm finding inflection template creation confusing, especially since I need to deal with both possessed and unpossessed forms... Fearfuljesuit (talk)
If you describe what you need I could try to help. DTLHS (talk) 21:32, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Basically, Fox (and Algonquian in general) nouns are either animate or inanimate. For Fox animate nouns, there are both unpossessed and possessed forms. For unpossessed animates there are four forms, marking singular/plural and proximate/obviative, in a 2*2 square. For possessed forms, you have singular and plural versions of the noun, plus singular and plural possessors, which may be 1st person exclusive (singular and plural), 1st person inclusive (plural only), 2nd person, 3rd person animate proximate, 3rd person animate obviative (no number distinction), and indefinite possessor (also no number distinction). Some nouns must have a possessive prefix, in which case they also have a special independent form with number marking... it's a bit complicated. OK I've created the two headword templates {{sac-noun-an}} and {{sac-noun-in}}. Do you want any of the forms to go in the headword line? I've also created the inflection {{sac-noun-animate-unpossessed}} which takes four parameters. DTLHS (talk) 22:02, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
And {{sac-noun-animate-possessed}}, which takes 9 parameters. DTLHS (talk) 22:17, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! The trouble with Fox is that although very few words are irregular, most of them have contraction or some other morphophonological change that's totally predictable, but has to be entered as an exception. Is there a way to give each word a "code" that could tell the inflection generator what to do?
Yes, we can pass the template a noun stem (probably as positional parameter(s)) and it can generate the forms. Then they can be overridden if necessary using named parameters for each individual form. See Template:de-conj-weak for example. DTLHS (talk) 00:37, 5 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, bit of confusion here. FJ was seeking to create inflectional templates, not headword templates. ObſequiousNewtGeſpꝛaͤchBeÿtraͤge 03:36, 5 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
