Please use templates in new entries

[edit]

The templates add categories and ensure consistent formatting. If you don't know the right templates for a language, at least use {{head}}. Also, I may be wrong about whether this applies to you (a babel-box would help), but: be careful about editing in languages you don't know well. It's very easy to run afoul of unexpected peculiarities of specific languages. For instance, Welsh has not only singular and plural, but also singulative and collective. Thanks! A very minor point

[edit]

When you add interwikis such as [[cy:grawnffrwyth]], please don't put a space in there, as in [[cy: grawnffrwyth]]. While it does work fine that way, it gets tagged as an error by an abuse filter, which clutters up the abuse logs. Thanks! Chuck Entz (talk) 16:06, 7 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

chard translations

[edit]

Austrian translations would be listed under German, we have no separate language code for Austrian; furthermore, "ast" is the code for Asturian. "Northern Fisian" should be "North Frisian". DTLHS (talk) 17:48, 26 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also, please use "Slovene" and not "Slovenian". DTLHS (talk) 17:51, 26 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Translations

[edit]

Please be more careful. Look at the Chechen translation in this diff, the Abkhaz translation in this diff. --Per utramque cavernam (talk) 16:48, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ukrainian translations

[edit]

It's "Ukrainian", not "Ukranian". DTLHS (talk) 03:47, 25 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Persian

[edit]

Hello, could you add Persian transliterations whilst you are adding tranlsations into Persian, please? Kaixinguo~enwiktionary (talk) 09:47, 29 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

wild service tree

[edit]

Hey! You kind of messed up the Romanian translation (a couple of times actually). Don't know if it was intentional, but I fixed it for you. Just please try to be more careful. --Robbie SWE (talk) 12:39, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry about that, I put the wrong code in, and thank you for fixing it. DPUH (talk) 13:03, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I'm just glad I figured out what you were trying to do. --Robbie SWE (talk) 18:29, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

French conjugations

[edit]

Hey. We have a bot that periodically makes French conjugated entries, so there's no real need to add all of them yourself. --New WT User Girl (talk) 21:35, 2 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I did wonder if there was a bot that does that. Thank you for telling me DPUH (talk) 05:33, 3 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Apostrophes

[edit]

Hi. Please don't forget that we use straight apostrophes here, not curly ones. Per utramque cavernam 15:41, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Since you are bold enough to list your various IP addresses, any chance we can get you on User:PseudoSkull/Etymologies_of_usernames? (Or is it "doesn't publicise user history"?) Cheers, Equinox 03:17, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ha! I will do, but it’s much simpler than that. Thanks, DPUH (talk) 08:02, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

arĥivisto

[edit]

The entry looked good, but the usual practice is to turn the least common variant (in durable sources) into an alternative form using a form-of template. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:37, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dutch entries

[edit]

They are looking good, but the phonemic transcription of the long e used here is /eː/, with [ɪː] being the phonetic transcription. Also we transcribe /oː/ instead of /o/, and this long o can be realised as [oː] or [oʊ̯]. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 11:38, 23 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wrong Czech translation

[edit]

In diff, you entered Czech "sériová vražda" as a translation, which is wrong. This was a edit adding a large number of languages that you probably do not know. When working on languages you do not know, you have to be very careful. --Dan Polansky (talk) 15:19, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

{{etyl}}

[edit]

Please don't use this template anymore. It's deprecated and we're working to get rid of it. Instead, use the more specific templates {{inh}}, {{bor}} or {{der}}. —Rua (mew) 10:46, 1 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Many translations at once

[edit]

In diff, you entered many translations in different languages at once. Can you please clarify how you verified the translations to be correct? --Dan Polansky (talk) 09:16, 5 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Translations taken from Wikipedia, but I did check their definitions, before entering them:

Czech:

Dutch:

German:

French:

Polish:

Slovak:

Swedish:

I hope that answers your question DPUH (talk) 12:11, 5 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cool, thank you. --Dan Polansky (talk) 14:42, 5 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

enorog-narwhal‎

[edit]

May I ask for a source for Slovene enorog meaning narwhal? My sources do not give this meaning. --Dan Polansky (talk) 11:49, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

https://fran.si/136/maks-pletersnik-slovensko-nemski-slovar/4000187/enorog?View=1&Query=enorog, maybe not the best source, but is what I used. The website also defines samorog as a narwhal so will include that --DPUH (talk) 12:12, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you and my apologies: I did not look carefully enough into the online sources at fran.si. --Dan Polansky (talk) 12:19, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
No worries --DPUH (talk) 13:09, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Tamil

[edit]

May I ask where I can verify Tamil சப்தசோதனைக்குழல், entered to mean stethoscope? --Dan Polansky (talk) 13:11, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here you go: https://dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/app/tamil-lex_query.py?qs=சப்தசோதனைக்குழல்&searchhws=yes --DPUH (talk) 13:26, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you again. I guess I have to give up trying to find something that does not meet WT:CFI. Keep up the good work. --Dan Polansky (talk) 13:31, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I do try to double-check, but sometimes I get a bit too eager to create a page, if you know what I mean! Thanks, there will be pages out there that don’t meet the criteria, so same to you :) DPUH (talk) 13:43, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
I now noticed that Tamil is on the list at Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion/Well documented languages. That means that for Tamil, the following applies: "use in permanently recorded media, conveying meaning, in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year", and we would need to find quotations of use rather than relying on a dictionary. I'll leave the entry be now, I guess; I don't know what Tamil corpus to peruse to find quotations of use. --Dan Polansky (talk) 14:03, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Russian

[edit]

оруэллизм looks like it is a noun meaning Orwellianism, doesn't it? (diff). --Dan Polansky (talk) 05:28, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

That’s a very good point, I should have noticed that. Thanks for correcting it --DPUH (talk) 10:10, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I would create оруэллизм to mean Orwellianism, but I am not sure it is attested (WT:ATTEST); it has some hits in google books:"оруэллизм", but these could be mentions and we need uses. --Dan Polansky (talk) 06:17, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Unattested translations

[edit]

Please don't just mass important translations by looking at Wikipedia article equivalents in other language Wikipedias. E.g. the Gothic word you added here and here are (obviously, in the former case) not attested (see WT:ATTEST) and shouldn't have been added. Be careful when dealing with material from languages you don't know! — Mnemosientje (t · c) 16:08, 31 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here is another case. Please stop adding translations from languages you have no clue about. Wikipedia articles in dead languages (in this case the Gothic Wikipedia article kanan) often use invented terms that do not meet our criteria for inclusion, so simply copying those Wikipedia entry titles yields faulty edits which others have to clean up. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 13:41, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi. It's an old edit but I wonder, by what kind of logic, the Ukrainian noun cолеци́зм (colecýzm) has two genders - masculine and feminine in diff? --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 23:43, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi, that'll be a mistake I made when entering the translation. Should have checked I put it in right. Apologies, DPUH (talk) 16:49, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dates of Dutch words

[edit]

I saw your entry of Dutch cyanose, and while most of it was good, I noticed that the date 1913 corresponded to the oldest cite in the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal. There are two problems with this, first of all it directly copies their work and might be a copyvio, secondly the WNT often makes no serious attempt to retrieve the oldest possible attestation so these dates will often be wrong. In this case the word appears in newspapers beginning in the 1830s. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 08:04, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ixcatec

[edit]

Hi DPUH, you created the lemma Ɂi¹nda³ back in 2019. While the spelling suggests IPA, the digits in the lemma are unclear. They are probably tones or pitch accents, and ¹, ³ might suggest low and mid tone, respectively. However, this is far from sure, since digits are also used in transcriptions of Norwegian, Swedish or Limburgish to distinguish pitch accent or contour tones. Since the Ixcatec language article on Wikipedia gives scant information, the nature of Ixcatec prosody remains unclear. Could you clarify what exactly is meant by these numbers?
