User:PUC/Blanket requests for translations

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

To whoever is adding blanket requests for translation, I'd be grateful if they would stop doing that: this is pointless, even harmful.

I'll explain why: I'm trying to empty Category:Requests for translations into French, but this is quite disheartening:

  • many requests are of a highly technical nature;
  • many look simply untranslatable;
  • many aren't high priority at all(!) (Haitian Vodoun Culture Language... okay)

So I think I'm simply gonna stop.

I would have liked to use some of those categories myself, for example Category:Requests for translations into Russian, since I'm studying Russian, but that category has been basically rendered useless because of those blanket translations: what native speaker wants to look for a translation of durable medical equipment? It's something you add when you know it, but it's incredibly boring work to look for that. The noise is drowning out the signal.

I don't think I'm the only one bothered by this; I know @Atitarev shares my opinion.

I'm using those when I positively know that someone is answering the requests: for example, I know @Surjection does that for Finnish systematically (and I thank him for that)... but I don't know of anyone else in any other language. Even then I'm trying to restrain myself and ask only for translations of reasonably useful words.

So please, if you want to get translations, collaborate with someone, and if they have some conditions, fulfil them. To mention Atitarev again, he was willing to empty the Category:Requests for translations into Belarusian, at a condition which I'm not prepared to fulfil at the moment: that I actually create entries for the red links he's adding. So I've stopped requesting those translations for now, even though I would have liked to continue.
