weird Balkan stuff
[edit]- note the initial /maG/ stuff, singular of Albanian (as proven by the Gypsy example) and likely more generally of Paleo-Balkan languages (possibly the barrow example)
- "barrow, tumulus" = Albanian gamule, gamulë, magulë, kallume, Romanian movilă, moghilă, măgură, măgulă, Aromanian mãgulã, Proto-Slavic *mogyla, *gomyla, Greek μαγούλα (magoúla)
- "Gypsy" = Albanian evgjit, magjyp, magjup, jevg, Aromanian yiftu, gheghiftu, Macedonian Ѓуптин (Ǵuptin), Greek γύφτος (gýftos)
- all ultimately from Greek
- "donkey" = Albanian gomar, magar, magjar, Romanian măgar, Greek γομάρι (gomári)
- IMO all ultimately from Greek, although usually not taken into consideration
- "crumb" = Albanian thërrime, thërrmijë, Romanian fărâmă, Aromanian sãrmã, Greek θρύμμα (thrýmma)!
- IMO everything from Greek, though usually the connection is rejected
