First attested as urch in 966. Etymology uncertain. A proposed derivation from *urd-k ("little island") is impossible. A proposed link between Urk and the Orkney Islands is implausible.

Urk was an island until the late 1930s. It is generally preferred, especially by people from Urk, to say op Urk (“on Urk”) instead of in Urk (“in Urk”) as if it were still an island.
