[edit]From Tuch (“cloth, fabric”) + Fühlung (“touching, contact”), literally “a contact close enough to touch someone’s clothes”. Originally used in military contexts, especially in precision marching, where it refers to the perfect distance between marchers, namely such that the edges of their sleeves touch but not their arms.

[edit]- Used especially in the expressions (mit jemandem) auf Tuchfühlung gehen (“to establish contact with someone (tentatively)”) or sitzen (“to sit very close to someone”) and auf Tuchfühlung sein/bleiben (“to be/stay in contact”).
