Etymology

[edit]

First attested as drintelen in 1520. Etymology unknown. Perhaps related to Middle Low German trendele (disk, flat round cake) or Middle Dutch trent (periphery, boundary line). It is also possible that the toponym refers to a third of a piece of land. Compare Noord Haffel and Zuid Haffel.

See also Limburgish Dringsele.
