Named after German physician Ludwig Traube (1818–1876). Described by one of his pupils in 1868.

1. (anatomy) A crescent-shaped anatomic space encompassed by the lower edge of the left lung, the anterior border of the spleen, the left costal margin and the inferior margin of the left lobe of the liver.
