Etymology
[edit]From Tor + Schluss + Panik, literally “gate-shut panic”. For safety reasons city gates used to be shut at nightfall (Torschluss, from Tor + Schluss), leaving latecomers no other choice than to stay outside, thereby exposing them to various dangers.
