Tonden

Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested with certainty as tonden in 1379-1380. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Proto-Germanic *tûn (“enclosed space”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. Another possibility is a derivation from a term cognate with tondel (“tinder”), German zünden (“kindle, ignite”).
