Two main origins:

  • Borrowed from Czech and Slovak Toman, a hypocoristic form of the personal name Tomáš.
  • Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Ó Tuamáin (descendant of Tuamán), a diminutive of tuama (grave, tomb, burial mound).
