Etymology

First attested as kercwere in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Tsjerkwert, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian tzercka (“church”) and werve (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to wert (“artificial mound used for habitation”).
