following up on the discussion of LT

Following up on the discussion of liquid thread notifications, which we stopped spamming CodeCat's talk page with (sorry CodeCat!)... what exactly do we have to do, as Eirikr put it, to "[watch] someone's talk page [like] when they don't have Liquid Threads installed". (Sorry if the two of you moved discussion somewhere else and I've missed it.) I myself would be interested to know. Despite your comment that "discussions that you started or participated in are watched individually", I (and it seems Eirikr) also get notifications of new discussions which we haven't participated in. - -sche (discuss) 21:34, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I first noticed that I had "new messages" when the User_talk:CodeCat#Oernoords._936 thread started up on CodeCat's page. And I've gotten a new message notification for *every* LT post on CodeCat's page, regardless of my participation. -- Eiríkr ÚtlendiTala við mig 21:56, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

As far as I know, there is no way to be notified for LQT talk pages in the same way as one is notified of changes to watched non-LQT talk pages. If one has the entire talk page watched, all new messages posted to that page appear in New messages. Otherwise, only responses to individual threads which are watched appear in New messages. One can watch a specific thread by clicking "Watch" in the menu in the top-right corner of a thread. Replying to a thread also automatically adds a thread to one's watchlist. (So, to answer Eirikr's question "Do I have to unwatch the page to not be notified of every single thread update?", yes, one does.)

Thank you, Yair, that's helpful. I think I've gathered that threads are stored as sub-pages of a user's Talk page, so if that's correct, that also answers my other question from before -- i.e., watching the Talk page will not show changes as expected in my watchlist. -- Cheers, Eiríkr ÚtlendiTala við mig 22:30, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Like Eirikr said, thank you, Yair; that's helpful to know!

Would a site notice like this one be helpful?

The kicker seems to be that every time each individual user adds LT to their Talk page, everyone watching that user's Talk page gets new message notifications for every LT post. I'm not sure if a site notice would be the way to go, since it's so dependent on 1) which users add LT, and 2) which other users are watching that user's Talk page. -- Eiríkr ÚtlendiTala við mig 06:30, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
