Inherited from Middle English Thanet, Tanet, from Old English Tænett, Tenet, from Brythonic (compare Latin Tanatus, Old Welsh Tanat).

Initial th- is due to an erroneous connection to Ancient Greek θᾰ́νᾰτος (thánatos).
