Etymology

First attested as wunzelen around 1170-1180. Derived from Latin *vini cellam (wine cellar) or vinicella (small vineyard). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Latin vincam (periwinkle, Vinca sp.). Compare Vaals.
