Necessity

Do we really need this template? What's wrong with <sub>...</sub>? Replacing that with {{sub|...}} only saves three characters, obscures the actual markup, and (marginally) increases server load -- none of which strike me as positives.

For OJP strings, it might make more sense to allow users to enter 1 or 2 as-is, and have the containing template (usually something like {{IPAfont}} or {{ja-usex}}) format the numbers appropriately.
