Discussion before template was moved from "Template:param"

[edit]

Use of this template (in its current form) on template documentation pages (example) is an exceedingly bad idea, IMO, because (as seen in the example) it renders the parameter names in {{{triple-braces notation}}}, as would be used inside template wikicode — which has nothing to do with how parameters are used in {{regular|template|calls}}. In other words, the triple-braces notation is only meaningful to template coders, not template users. Since the target audience of template documentation is users, it makes no sense to use the triple-braces notation there. - dcljr (talk) 06:52, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Note, BTW, that using this template in an explanation of how to use parameter values inside templates would be fine, but it looks like the vast majority of uses are on template/doc subpages, so I would recommend changing the rendering to just something like this, and forget about the "|" and "!" stuff. - dcljr (talk) 07:37, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Unless someone says something soon, I'm prepared to change this template as described above. Of course, if any instance of this template actually is in a context where {{{triple-braces}}} notation is appropriate, I'll change it to not use the (modified) template. - dcljr (talk) 23:48, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead. Maybe add a = after the parameter name. — Ungoliant (Falai) 00:21, 14 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've finally acted on this. Instead of changing this template and altering "legitimate" uses of it (as alluded to above), I've decided to create a new Template:docparam and replace this template by that one on all the /documentation subpages (very annoying to actually do, but a better solution, AISI). I've taken Ungoliant's advice to include an "=" after the parameter name, and used underlining to set off the parameter visually from the surrounding text. Interested parties can discuss the new template further at Template talk:docparam, if desired. - dcljr (talk) 06:49, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Page move

[edit]

This template was just moved/renamed based on a brief discussion at Wiktionary:Beer parlour/2019/October#Deprecate {{docparam}}. Comments regarding the move may be directed to there (for some reasonable amount of time, anyway). - dcljr (talk) 05:22, 14 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
