I made some changes now, both to demonstrate this and some other minor formatting fixes. The trick may need some explanation. When a parameter is marked as required, there's an error when it's missing. However, this error is suppressed when the current page is a Template page. The default value is normally used when a value is missing, so it would also be the default value in regular pages. But because the parameter is also required, the default value is never used because an error is shown. Except on Template pages, where there's no error. So you have a default that applies only for the Template page. —CodeCat 22:50, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
