Template talk:lt-proper-noun-m-as
Add topicVocative singular
[edit]@Almanbet Janışev Why did you change the vocative singular from -e to -ai-ai to -e? The best-seeming sources I can find say that for personal names, the vocative singular ends in -ai, not -e. A less academic source that I like is the article at the bottom of p6 of https://www.draugas.org/news/speaking_lithuanian_draugas_news_2014.pdf. --RichardW57m (talk) 13:28, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- In Section 3 of a published paper "Exploring Features for Named Entity Recognition in Lithuanian Text Corpus" https://aclanthology.org/W13-5611.pdf from Lithuanian authors based in Lithuania, we are given the complete paradigm of Jonas = "To exemplify: the possible inflection forms of masculine person name Jonas (John) are: Jonas (singular nominative), Jono (singular genitive), Jonui (singular dative), Joną (singular accusative), Jonu (singular ablative), Jone (singular locative), Jonai (singular and plural vocative; plural nominative), Jonų (plural genitive), Jonams (plural dative), Jonus (plural accusative), Jonais (plural ablative), Jonuose (plural locative)." (Having plurals did surprise me, but for names English allows plurals, so perhaps Lithuanian does as well.) --RichardW57m (talk) 13:45, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- I've now found a textbook "Lithuanian: A Comprehensive Grammar" by Meilutė Ramonienė, Joana Pribušauskaitė, Jogilė Teresa Ramonaitė, and Loreta Vilkienė https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Y7zEDwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Jonai%22+Lithuanian&source=gbs_navlinks_s which, at Section 2.4.2.8, confirms the pluralising of proper names, rather as in English. --RichardW57m (talk) 14:01, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- Section 2.5.2 of "Lithuanian: A Comprehensive Grammar" also confirms the vocative singular in -ai for personal names in -as. --RichardW57m (talk) 14:03, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- Reverted to -ai Friday 12 April. --RichardW57 (talk) 18:05, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
Restricting scope
[edit]@86.169.238.217, Apisite, 86.183.26.103, Adamnewwikipedianaccount, Almanbet Janışev: I propose documenting this template as being for personal nouns only. For place names, I will replace it by {{lt-noun-m-as|n=s}}
or {{lt-noun-m-as-1|n=s}}
, or possibly add missing stress marking and choose the corresponding template, using it with |n=s
. --RichardW57m (talk) 10:40, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
