Bolding
[edit]Is it not better to bold all scripts, rather than just Romaji (i.e. Latn)? Mglovesfun (talk) 16:57, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- Bolding some kanji characters can obscure strokes, making them harder to read. -- Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 03:40, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Rōmaji
[edit]Could someone fix the spelling of romaji
in the template to use the macron? The proper spelling should be rōmaji
instead. -- Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 19:44, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
- Better still; could someone use English? Rōmaji is the Japanese word for Roman letter(s). Why are we expecting readers to know what this means? Change it to "Romanised" or something. Jimp 20:02, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- We already assume readers will understand what kanji, hiragana, and katakana are, and rōmaji is similar standard fare for anyone studying Japanese. If it's really an issue, I would strongly advocate for making these terms all links in the template to their respective entries, rather than replacing them with other English terms. -- Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 20:22, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
head?

Romaji links
[edit]The link for romaji characters should be {{l|ja|{{rom}}}}
or {{ja-l|{{rom}}}}
instead of {{wlink|{{{rom}}}}}
so that the link points to the proper language section. --Soardra (talk) 00:09, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I've chewed on that for some time. One of the real problems here is the use (mis-use, in my opinion) of
{{wlink}}
. This does some rigamarole to allow template users to pass eitherrom
or[[rom]]
, and{{wlink}}
either adds the square brackets or not, as needed. However, this introduces all kinds of downstream problems, not least is the inability to specify language.
- I considered making the change myself some time back, but without any means of finding entries that might actually need the
{{wlink}}
before changing the template, I backed off making the change for fear of the potential for breakage. - (PS: One minor point is that, when using
{{ja-l}}
for romaji, it should be{{ja-l|||{{rom}}}}
with the extra vertical bars -- the first and second args to{{ja-l}}
are formatted for Japanese script, which is ugly when applied to Latin characters. The downside to using{{ja-l}}
here is that the third arg, while using the Latin script, is also italicized, which is inappropriate for headwords.). - -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 17:30, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Adding counter categories?
[edit]Hello, for entries in which the counter
parameter is specified, would anyone else be in favour of automatically populating a respective "Japanese nouns counted by ..." category using this template, akin to "Chinese nouns classified by ..."? There are currently not that many headwords in which this is even provided, but as a search tool, I think it would be quite valuable nonetheless. @Eirikr @Theknightwho Kiril kovachev (talk) 23:35, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Agreed that this would be useful information. I think the only reason it's missing is that none of us has gotten around to it yet. :) ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:34, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
