Help with Italian template

[edit]
Moved here from User talk:Rodasmith.

I would like to replace various Italian adjective templates with just one {{it-adj}}. (The alternative is a couple more to cover exceptions). I would like it to take a stem, plus either zero, two or four endings.

With zero endings it should work like {{it-adj-reg}} (see chiaro as an example).

With two endings it should work like {{it-adj-reg-e}} (see felice as an example).

With four endings it should work as it does now (see clinico as an example).

Do you think that this is something you could do for me? Or is it a lot of work? SemperBlotto 10:06, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Assuming you meant for the {{it-adj-reg}} pattern to apply to calls with one argument (instead of zero), I implemented what I think you requested at {{it-adj}}. Please let me know if I misinterpreted your request. Rod (A. Smith) 19:08, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Formation of feminine and plurals

[edit]

Typically, the feminine and plural of Italian adjectives are formed by modifying the ending as follows:-

  • Masculine singular ends in -o
    • feminine singular -a; masculine plural -i; feminine plural -e (nuovo, nuova, nuovi, nuove)
  • one syllable preceding -co (similarly -go)
    • feminine singular -ca; masculine plural -chi; feminine plural -che (stanco, stanca, stanchi, stanche; lungo, lunga, lunghi, lunghe)
  • two or ore syllables preceding -co (similarly -go)
    • feminine singular -ca; masculine plural -ci; feminine plural -che (antipatico, antipatica, antipatici, antipatiche)
  • unstressed -io
    • feminine singular -ia; masculine plural -i; feminine plural -ie (vecchio, vecchia, vecchi, vecchie)
  • stressed -io (-cio, -gio)
    • feminine singular -ia; masculine plural -ii; feminine plural -ie (restio, restia, restii, restie)
    • feminine singular -cia, -gia; masculine plural -ci, -gi; feminine plural -ce, ge (marcio, marcia, marci, marce; grigio, grigia, grigi, grige)
  • Masculine singular ends in -tore
    • feminine singular -trice; masculine plural -tori; feminine plural -trici (accoglitore, accoglitrice, accoglitori, accoglitrici)
  • Masculine and feminine singular ends in -e
    • plural ends in -i (giovane, giovani)
  • Masculine and feminine singular ends in -a
    • masculine plural ends in -i (ottimista, ottimisti)
    • feminine plural ends in -e (ottimista, ottimiste)

This template is still hopelessly inefficient. It should really guess the inflection based on the final letters and of course allow these inflections to be overridden by adding parameters for irregular ones. Renard Migrant (talk) 12:18, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
