See also {{ISO 639}} for specifying the ISO 639-1 or 639-3 codes.

As Wiktionary uses ISO 639-1 codes when available, I think we should note that on entry pages for language names when applicable. As this is the most common template on those pages, I was wondering if we could add an optional parameter for the 639-1 code here. If we mention the 639-1 before the 639-3 code, this might help newbie editors pick the right one in their own editing, causing fewer problems with WT:BP#Duplicate Language Codes.

Since the Ethnolgue doesn't include ancient, historical, and constructed languages, I've created a mirror of this template at {{Linguist List}} (they contributed those codes to the ISO 639-3 standard). If it's not there either there's the general purpose {{ISO 639}} (maybe if this works out, {{ethnologue}} and {{Linguist List}} could be custom calls of this one). See usages at Ido and Polish using the generalized template. --Bequw¢τ 23:29, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
