'definition' or 'reading'

[edit]

Can we have an option where we say the reading is uncertain, for e.g. Linear B glyphs that we know are syllabic letters, we're just not sure for which syllables. kwami (talk) 06:04, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@kwami: Chuck Entz restricted editing of {{uncertain}} to template editors and administrators in April 2019; that level of protection was preserved when Benwing2 moved the template to {{def-uncertain}} in January 2023. Consequently, I can't make the following change myself.
AFAICT, all you'd need to do is to change the first instance of meaning in the template to {{#if:{{{reading|}}}|reading|meaning}} for the effect you desire, triggered by |reading=1. If you also want separate categories for Terms with uncertain reading by language (analogous to Category:Terms with uncertain meaning by language), make the same substitution of the second instance of meaning in the template. Alternatively, if the plural Category:Terms with uncertain readings by language sounds better/more grammatical, substitute that second instance with {{#if:{{{reading|}}}|readings|meaning}}.
I can see this feature being useful for languages like Japanese, too, where kanji might have uncertain readings (pronunciation/kana transcription). 0DF (talk) 13:25, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
