Numeric input

The template accepts 4, 5, 6, or 7 as input for the language parameter. What do these figures represent? —Michael Z. 2008-12-03 17:48 z

It's suppose to support different stages of the "development" of Cuneiform symbols. In an outburst of intellignce of Unicode consortium, all of those are allocated to the same code points, even though they vastly differ (which is perfectly normal given that cuneiform was used for >3 millenia to write languages in several major families). So for Sumerogram DINGIR you have both and all on the same article - 𒀭. This number support should be obsoleted in favour of subtemplates such as hit-Xsux, Neo-akk-Xsux etc., but the problem is that there are no fonts to supports all signs in all periods, so it would be the best to default them all to all fonts, giving preference to certain fonts for some languages.

2010 update

Problems

This doesn't work for me (on Firefox). These all display the same:

• {{Xsux|𒈾|1}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|2}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|3}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|4}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|5}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|6}}: Template:Xsux
• {{Xsux|𒈾|7}}: Template:Xsux

...namely, as the Old Babylonian form, which would work for 4-6 but should not be displaying for 7. It's annoying because Neo-Assyrian is exactly the form that most books and dictionaries use for Akkadian. I know I have the fonts for it because I can see it in other programs; weirdly, it displays fine in the headword template at the 𒈾 page (where {{mul/script}} specifies "None"), but not when used without any template at all: 𒈾. I changed the font name 'Free Idg Serif' to FreeIdgSerif. On my machine, nos. 6 and 7 are now differentiated from 4 and 5. Let me know if this has worsened the situation for anyone. —Michael Z. 2013-06-26 04:21 z

Reload the style sheet. I disabled bolding for cuneiform headwords. Let me know if this doesn’t work for you, or if there are other places that need to be changed. —Michael Z. 2013-06-26 02:03 z

I will implement the lang attribute for this template. According to module:languages, the possible languages for the script code Xsux are:

• sux  Sumerian = 4
• akk  Akkadian = 6
• xeb  Eblaite = 6
• elx  Elamite = 6
• xht  Hattic = 6
• hit  Hittite = 6
• xhu  Hurrian = 6
• xlu  Luwian = 6
• plq  Palaic = 6
• xur  Urartian = 7

The template provides font choices for the languages I have marked in bold. What should be chosen for the other languages? Can I assume that the template is always requested with a lang parameter? What languages can correspond to the codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7? —Michael Z. 2013-06-26 02:23 z
