Chapter

[edit]

@Sgconlaw Should |section= (before the page) or |chapter= (before the title) be used for the chapter output? I made the edit as I noticed Jberkel edit moved a {{RQ:Thackeray Barry Lyndon}} quotation because the “date changed”; the problem was in the line 18{{#switch:{{{chapter|}}}{{{title|}}}{{{2|}}} (i.e., |chapter= and |title= were both used to determine the year (| Barry Lyndon = 44''' January–December'''); {{{chapter|}}}{{{title|}}} is XVIBarry Lyndon). The quotation Jberkel edited uses a Roman numeral in the |chapter= parameter (not a chapter name), for which “chapter” is added before Arabic and Roman numerals, and quotation marks if not, automatically by Module:quote; “chapter ” would have to be added in |section= in the template and quotation marks would have to be added manually in the quotation if a chapter name is used without the numeral (i.e., input: |chapter=XVI or |chapter=In which I Show Myself to be a Man of Spirit; output: |section=chapter {{{chapter|}}}). @J3133: usually for a simple work, |chapter= should be used for the chapter number or name (not both). But in a more complex work like a compilation where |chapter= is already being used for the title of a specific work in the compilation, |section= seems a logical place to put the chapter number and name. (In that situation, if it’s desired to include the name, then the number should also be provided, otherwise the citation may look odd. I’ve also used this technique when magazine articles are divided into chapters, since |chapter=/|title= would be used for the article title. — SGconlaw (talk) 03:43, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
An alternative is to put the chapter after the title of the specific work (for example, "A Shabby Genteel Story. Chapter I. [Chapter name].") What you've done for {{RQ:Thackeray Miscellanies}} seems fine too, though I wonder if there are too many ins. Do you think we should try to standardize? — SGconlaw (talk) 03:43, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw: Should it be changed (in this template) to |section= or should the current way be kept? J3133 (talk) 03:46, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: sorry, there was an edit conflict. Maybe we should try to standardize, then. What is your preference? — SGconlaw (talk) 03:49, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw: I do not really have a preference; I added |chapter= as I did not notice the chapter was already shown by |section=, which is why I did not remove it, causing the chapter to appear twice. Whichever way you prefer is fine. J3133 (talk) 04:21, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
